This Sunday, July 5, the National Republican Guard (GNR) raised dozens of administrative offenses against establishments and people in Albufeira, for disrespect of the rules imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the source of that force told Lusa today. . The infractions “have been daily”.

According to the source, the GNR was called on Sunday night to disperse hundreds of people of various nationalities who were concentrated on the public road and drinking alcoholic beverages in Rua da Oura - known as the street of bars in Albufeira -, in default of the law and the recommendations of the General Directorate of Health (DGS).

"Several administrative offenses were raised against dozens of people for the consumption of alcoholic beverages and the owners of establishments that operated outside the legally authorized hours," he said.

According to the source contacted by Lusa, who was unable to specify the number of administrative offenses raised by the GNR, "the violations detected in that area have been daily", namely the disrespect for the rules imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, "not only of establishments operating after midnight, such as drinking alcoholic beverages on public roads'.

The same source added that the GNR has reinforced actions to sensitize people and owners of establishments to the risks that concentrations of people entail in this period of pandemic, clarifying the mandatory use of masks in closed spaces and the distances from safety.

“Despite the daily reinforcement of awareness actions, people still do not respect the indications”, he highlighted.

In his turn, José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, told Lusa that the municipality will reinforce awareness-raising actions with the owners of restaurant and beverage establishments, alerting them to the obligation to comply with DGS standards.

"From Wednesday, not only will we have meetings with the owners, but we will also have a van with sound information circulating in the streets, where the measures in force in Portugal are indicated", he said.

According to José Carlos Rolo, the abnormal concentrations of people detected in Oura in recent days “have been, above all, of young foreigners who are on finalist trips, mostly Dutch”.

"I assume that the rules and recommendations in the Netherlands are different from those in force in Portugal and that young people do not wear masks and do not respect the rules of distance, due to ignorance," he concluded.

According to the mayor, the application and supervision of the rules is being coordinated between the local authority and the GNR, "an entity that has been acting as a tax authority when it detects non-compliance, namely in the opening hours of the establishments".
