Aljezur pays half the salaries of lifeguards on concessioned beaches in the municipality

Measures are intended to support the local economy and increase safety on the beaches, a major tourist attraction in the county

This summer, the Aljezur City Council is going to invest 125 euros to guarantee the safety of its beaches, whether under concession or not.

José Gonçalves, president of the municipality of Aljezur, told the Sul Informação that the funds are intended to support the hiring of lifeguards, the purchase of material and equipment for the implementation of surveillance and help posts, as well as the purchase of identifying clothing for the teams of beach assistants that may be created.

In addition, he stressed, the municipality itself should hire lifeguards for the three non-concessioned beaches in the municipality – Adegas, Vale dos Homens and Vale Figueiras. The great difficulty, he added, will be "finding the lifeguards, because there aren't any."

As for the concessioned beaches – Odeceixe, Amoreira, Monte Clérigo, Arrifana, Bordeira and Amado -, the Chamber will pay the concessionaires “50% of the total charge with the maturity of the lifeguards, who are part of the effective surveillance system and assistance from the beach they own, up to a maximum of 900 euros and up to a maximum of three».

This support "will be granted for the period of the bathing season, between June 6 and September 30", added the mayor.

In addition to these support and investments, the Municipality of Aljezur is also hosting, from 1 June until the end of September, four marines of the Portuguese Navy, who are strengthening «safety on the beaches, in awareness-raising and behavioral counseling actions. on this extensive coast'. The municipality guarantees housing for the four soldiers, added José Gonçalves.

This is a «joint initiative with the Maritime Authority» that is part of «a broader action, throughout the Algarve, bringing more confidence and having an action of inspection and awareness, to the users of the beaches in our municipality, from Praia from Amado to Praia de Odeceixe».

The mayor of Aljezur also highlighted, in his statements to the Sul Informação, that all this investment is «a measure for the beaches, which are the great support for the demand for tourism in our municipality», thus contributing «to more security, more confidence» and to «help and boost the local economy».
