Maritime Police seize 600 meter net in Armona Aquaculture Area

Fish that were trapped in the nets were returned to their habitat

The local command of the Maritime Police of Olhão seized, on Thursday, a trammel net measuring about 600 meters that was unmarked inside the Pilot Area of Aquaculture Production of Armona, an area where fishing is prohibited.

The fish that was in the nets «was returned to its natural habitat because it was alive, and the respective notice was raised, which will now give rise to the administrative infraction process», explains the National Maritime Authority.

This organization recalls that «the Pilot Area for Aquaculture Production of Armona is duly signaled and marked on nautical charts, so that fishing in its interior constitutes a contravention».

"In the case of fishing gears anchored horizontally, these must be marked at the ends with buoys, masts and flags, with the vessel to which they belong being identified, and the use of fishing gears improperly marked is also an infraction."
