Olhão inaugurated two new statues and has a renovated school (almost) ready to open

Two new statues and the redevelopment of EB1 nº5 were in focus

There are 212 years of history and connection to the sea, the Ria Formosa and the sea. O Day of the Municipality of Olhão was celebrated today with the usual inaugurations and with the no less traditional visit to an emblematic work.

In time of pandemic, the program and the entourage was reduced to a minimum. Thus, it was a group of just over two dozen people, mostly mayors, who attended the different events, starting with the inauguration of the statue of the seahorse, at the roundabout of the Hotel Real Marina, at the west entrance of the city.

The five-meter-tall seahorse served as a frame for the official photo, but also as a point of attraction for passing cars, which invariably slowed down to better see the new statue.

This work of art was conceived, designed and designed by Isa Fernandes and aims to give more visibility and help in the conservation of this emblematic and very endangered animal, which has one of its last refuges in the waters of the Ria Formosa worldwide. The construction of the statue itself was in charge of Alexandru Groza, from the company Versatile Profit.

On the other side of the city, next to another statue that was inaugurated, the same scenario: many onlookers, cars stopped at the entrance or even in the middle of the roundabout and some honking horns from those in a hurry to reach their destination.

Here, the canning industry worker who there expected, patiently, for several days, but it was always covered by cloths and a plastic tarp. Once again, the inauguration took place without speeches, but between smiles and exchanges of words with the authors of the play.

This work is a tribute to the women who worked for decades and were the backbone of the canning industry in the municipality. The statue is by José Carlos Almeida and António Faustino.

Elementary School No. 5 in Olhão

In between, the delegation visited the Basic School of 1st Cycle nº5, whose rehabilitation works are practically concluded.

A year and a half and two million euros after they started, the works will even be ready at the beginning of the 2020/21 school year, as planned.

As part of this intervention, «the six existing classrooms, in the original buildings, of the Centenaries Plan [for the construction of schools, promoted during the Estado Novo] were remodeled», explained António Pina, mayor of Olhão, on the day that the works started in 2018 .

“We are also going to use another existing building, where the multi-disability classrooms used to function, and build three more classrooms. In other words, the school will have nine rooms», he added.

Once the works have been carried out, a new building stands out, where conditions for children with disabilities have been “significantly improved, as they deserve it”.

In this new block, in addition to the multi-disability rooms, a refectory, a multipurpose room and a library were also built.

The outdoor spaces were also re-qualified, “to allow children to play in safety”.
