The Santas Casas da Misericórdia in Lagos, Portimão, Alvor, Vila do Bispo and Aljezur once again barred visits by family members to users of homes under their responsibility, as a way of "preventing" possible contagion, following the illegal party that has already provoked nearly four dozen new Covid-19 cases.

Armindo Vicente, president of the Secretariat of Mercies of the Algarve, told the Sul Informação that this "concerted measure" was decided today.

Altogether, “12 residential establishments are covered by this decision”: six homes in Lagos, one home and a Continued Care Unit in Portimão, one home in Alvor, two in Vila do Bispo and another in Aljezur. In the case of the latter, visits to users had not yet been reopened and will now be postponed for some time.

In the case of the Misericórdia of Vila do Bispo, of which Armindo Vicente is the provider, an employee who had “family members at the party” and therefore may have contacted infected people, is now at home, “prophylactically”, awaiting the results of the screening tests you have already done. «It is better to wait a day or two, than to be taking a risk», underlined the provider.

“The problem is that many of the people who attended that party in Odiáxere live in Lagos and in the surrounding counties and have family connections in many places. There are many family ramifications. Therefore, it is better to prevent”, concluded Armindo Vicente.

The homes for the elderly in the Algarve, namely those under the responsibility of the Misericórdias, together with the Algarve Biomedical Center and Social Security, were pioneers in making Covid-19 screening tests of its users and employees.

Apart from the Lar da Misericórdia in Boliqueime, where users and employees were infected, as well as five deaths, no other residential structure for the elderly in the Algarve had positive cases, following the 8373 tests carried out (including re-tests).

For this reason, the president of the Secretariat of Misericórdias do Algarve regrets that the “irresponsibility” of the people who participated in the party in Odiáxere could “put into question all the prevention work done so far”.
