Navy coordinates search for missing man off the Algarve

The Navy, through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisbon), is coordinating a search operation at sea of ​​a 54-year-old citizen of the Czech Republic, a crew member of a merchant ship flying the flag of Hong Kong, sailing about 40 miles south of the Algarve coast.

The alert was received at MRCC Lisbon at 11:20 am, through the communications network of the world maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS), reporting that a container ship, bound for Sines, would have identified the absence of a member of its crew. .

"In view of the period between the time the individual was last seen on board and the time his absence was detected, a search area was defined to allocate search and rescue resources, both surface and aerial,” explains the Navy.

Search operations are being carried out by the Portuguese Navy, namely the NRP Scorpio and NRP João Roby ships, as well as the Portuguese Air Force P 3-C CUP+ aircraft, from squadron 601 – “Lobos”.
