This 1st of May (almost) had no beach or picnics

on the beach of Faro, the GNR did not allow cars that were not owned by residents or priority vehicles.

Police controls on access to Praia de Faro and at the entrance to the Algarve capital, the ban on picnics and circulation in several counties, as well as horse patrols through Mata do Ludo, marked a 1st of May marked by the state of emergency still in force and by the extra restrictions imposed by the Government this long weekend.

On a day when the mild temperature and the sun invite outdoor walks, trips to the beach and traditional Labor Day picnics, the Covid-19 pandemic drove the vast majority of the population away from two of what would be the main locations. of choice to spend this day in the Algarve capital.

At the Praia de Faro, now known as the Rotunda do Caranguejo, there were no vehicles except those belonging to residents and emergency or service vehicles. The outdoor park on the beach was also closed and the GNR military were not letting anyone touch the road, at least until the curve before the straight that leads to the airport roundabout.

Even so, those who arrived on foot or by bicycle could use the walkway to access the beach.

According to the Sul Informação on site, in the morning there were many people trying to access the beach, without success. In the afternoon, the situation was much calmer, not least because the message that the GNR was blocking the passage spread.

A resident revealed to our newspaper that «you hardly see anyone in Praia, something that is quite unusual, especially on a holiday».

This situation was repeated in other parts of the Algarve. In Lagos, the City Council prohibited the «circulation, gatherings and picnics in green areas and on the coast, located, in particular, in the National Forest of Barão de S. João, in the Bravura Dam and in Porto de Mós (Parque de Merendas) ».

In Lagoa, great restrictions were also imposed on movement and permanence along the coast and on the council's walkways.
