UAlg participates in a project that will use technology to bring people's heritage closer

The University of Algarve (UAlg) is part of a project that wants to improve, through augmented reality, visits to the World Heritage Site, recognized by UNESCO, in the Mediterranean. 

This project is called “iHERITAGE ICT Mediterranean platform for UNESCO cultural heritage”.

«The objective of the application is part of the development of augmented reality technologies, virtual reality and mobile applications that enable the improvement of the experience of visiting the cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO», explains UAlg.

Led by the Italian partner Regione Siciliana – Assessorato del Turismo, dello Sport and dello Spettacolo, in the case of the Algarve, the actions will be developed through UAlg and will have the Mediterranean Diet as a patrimonial element.

This application thus intends to improve and disseminate new technologies in cultural visits to areas of the Mediterranean, based on World Heritage sites.

“Thus, we seek to improve the experience of visiting cultural places, both for visitors in general and for researchers and scientists, based on immersive technology and augmented reality, in a proposal that unites countries like Italy around the heritage. , Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Spain and Portugal», adds the UAlg.

i-Heritage is an application to the “Eni Cbc Mediterranean Sea Basin Program 2014-2020” for strategic proposals in the area of ​​innovation and knowledge transfer, in the priority axis: A.2.1. Support technological transfer and commercialization of research results.

“It is expected that the results will generate effects in the dimension of new technologies and innovation such as the creation of patents, through the creation of itineraries and virtual contents”, says UAlg.

The total amount of European funding approved for the project is around 3,5 million euros. 198 projects competed for this call, but only 22 will receive European funding. The University of Algarve is thus a partner in one of the two approved projects involving Portugal.

The UAlg team includes researchers from three research centers. Led by Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, director of the Superior School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (ESGHT) and researcher at the Research Center for Tourism, Sustainability and Well-Being (CinTurs), it also has Mauro Figueiredo, professor at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia (ISE). ) and researcher at the Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA), Mirian Tavares, professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FCHS) and researcher at the Center for Research in Arts and Communication (CIAC) and Bruno Silva, professor at the Escola Superior de Education and Communication (ESEC) and also a CIAC researcher.
