Mercados de Olhão celebrate 104 years and think about a future without plastic

About 15 thousand paper bags will be distributed, free of charge, by Market operators

The Municipal Markets of Olhão celebrate, this Friday, May 1st, their 104th anniversary and, to mark the date, a campaign will be launched that wants to eradicate plastic bags.

Thus, «about 15 thousand paper bags will be distributed, free of charge, by market operators, for use in their sales, an important investment that bets on differentiation and environmental awareness», says the Chamber of Olhão.

"Assuming the commitment to raise awareness of the scourge of plastic waste at sea and the harm they cause to all marine life, the intention is to change habits with regard to the packaging of purchases made in this commercial space in excellence of Olhão», he adds.

The functional and extended-use paper bag “guarantees the quality of fish, shellfish, molluscs, crustaceans, vegetables, fruits and other food products purchased fresh, even in the freezer”.

The 104th anniversary of the Municipal Markets of Olhão also takes place under the motto “100% fresh products”, which appeals to consumers who prefer the excellence of the products sold in the markets in their purchases, valuing the products, sellers and markets in Olhão.

In addition to being one of the favorite places for their shopping, the Municipal Markets are one of the ex-libris of the city and county, being intimately linked to its history.

They began to be built in 1912, being inaugurated four years later. For over a century, they have been one of the illustrated postcards of Olhão and a must-visit for tourists and residents alike.

«These are model examples of iron and glass architecture, with an enormous urban impact, in exposed brick and metallic structure».

Undergoing extensive restoration work, they were reopened to the public on July 3, 1998. Inside, the walls covered with tiles by Costa Pinheiro stand out.
