Albufeira Council gives 30 euros to associations to ensure animal welfare

Funding will be given to AGA, Pata Ativa and PRAVI

The Municipality of Albufeira signed protocols worth 30 thousand euros with three animal protection associations operating in the municipality that aim to ensure the collection, medical treatment and subsequent adoption of dogs and cats.

AGA – Association of Friends of the Algarve Cats, Pata Ativa – Association for the Defense of Animals and Nature of Albufeira and Pravi – Support Project for Helpless Victims are the entities that will receive ten thousand euros each from the municipality for guarantee the rights and welfare of animals for a period of one year.

According to the Municipality of Albufeira, AGA is a non-profit association in Albufeira dedicated to «the collection, veterinary medical treatment, deworming and sterilization of feral cats (they live in colonies) and abandoned cats, which are found in the municipality of Albufeira. AGA also provides this support to cats whose owners cannot afford it”.

This association also temporarily houses cats and promotes and ensures the adoption of those collected, among other actions.

Pata Ativa, on the other hand, “has developed several actions to raise awareness in the local community about the need for vaccination, deworming, sterilization and good treatment of animals. It has collected those who are wandering, in collaboration with the Animal Welfare Centre, a Municipality structure, and promotes their rehabilitation, in addition to carrying out various actions aimed at adoption».

The present protocol provides that the association "participate in the actions of the Municipality related to the promotion of the rights and welfare of animals, as well as in environmental and public health actions".

PRAVI – Support Project for Helpless Victims, undertakes to «design and carry out, under its responsibility, annually, a program aimed at the pursuit of its activities, which relate to the collection and veterinary medical treatment, vaccination, deworming , identification and sterilization, promotion of responsible adoption of stray animals, abandoned animals and animals held by low-income families residing in the municipality of Albufeira. It is also up to this association to attend to cases that may be signaled by the Municipality».

For José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, «with this support for the exercise of the activities of these associations, as well as the collaboration and openness of the Municipality, we can already give a full response to the needs of animals».
The mayor admits that "there is still a lot to be done in this matter, namely in terms of raising awareness of their rights", but since this is "a matter of public health, it is also a matter of citizenship".

José Carlos Rolo calls for the ongoing pandemic not to be a reason for abandoning domestic animals.
