there will be a trailer that becomes a restaurant, a horse-van and even a beach. The vehicle will travel around the Algarve to tell a story based on the famous work Dom Quixote, by Cervantes. “À Babuja”, LAMA's new play, is an “algarvian epic” with a premiere scheduled for February 14, at 21 pm, at Associação Recreativa e Cultural de Músicos, in Faro.

João de Brito, artistic director of LAMA – Algarve Arts and Media Laboratory, explains to Sul Informação what will be this new production, which is part of the 365Algarve.

«We thought of using a van that could be a trailer of food with typical Algarvian products. Of course, this always has the initial premise, which is then refined. In other words: these products will still be there, they will go down in history, but the show will not be about them», he says.

Thus, the idea was born that will bring together actors João de Brito, André Canário and musician Igor Silva on stage.

«It will be a show with text, music, but it will also have a lot of physical work. I based myself on the basic structure of Don Quixote. André Canário, at a certain point, is reading fantasy and chivalry books. He gets excited and decides that he has to go on a journey in search of his beloved Dulcinea in his horse-van. That's how this whole epic begins,” he says, smiling.

This will be a street show that, despite having a van as its central point, will not leave the site.

«It will suffer is several transformations. It will be Don Quixote's horse van, Sancho Pança's restaurant, a beach, possibly a Medieval Fair... Throughout history we will always have that contrast between the fantasy and the crazy side of Don Quixote and the more realistic side of Sancho Pança », explains.

Everything will be "spiced" with "typical things from the Algarve". For example: Don Quixote's armor will be with…beach buoys. The food in the restaurant, which the van will be transformed into, at a certain point, will be typically from the Algarve.

The name “À Babuja” is also a “very Algarvian expression”. «It's something that means a lot – being by the sea, being there on the edge of something, close to people. But drooling over seafood, for example, means taking the sand away from it», says João de Brito.

After the debut, in Faro, the show will pass through the municipalities of São Brás de Alportel, Loulé, Olhão, Vila do Bispo, Lagos, Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim.

For now, LAMA is in a live wheel of trials. “We are in the final stretch of preparation. We still have a few things to close. We didn't want Don Quixote to die, as happens in real history», he says.

This is also a special show for being the first of the 10th anniversary celebrations of this artistic company.

«I have good expectations, it's a show for the whole family, which interests me a lot, and outdoors. It will have a comic character too, the fact that it has little text is also related to being on the street. I think people will identify themselves», he concludes.
