Castelo de Silves hosts a photography exhibition by Santiago Macias

Exhibition can be seen until April 12th

The photography exhibition “Caligrafias”, by Santiago Macias, will be on display from tomorrow at 16 pm and until April 00th in the keep of Silves Castle.

The exhibition, promoted by the Municipality of Silves, includes the presentation of more than three dozen black and white photographs, «which reveal different experiences, spaces and details that, in addition to the issue of affinity, have much in common. with Silves, namely with regard to Muslim culture”, according to the municipality.

 

About Santiago Macias:

Born in Lisbon on June 3, 1963. He graduated in Art History (1985) from the University of Lisbon, did a postgraduate course (1986) in Conservation and Recovery of Buildings and Monuments at the Lisbon Superior School of Fine Arts , completed his Masters (1995) in Medieval History at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and obtained a PhD (2005) in History at the University of Lyon II.

As a senior technician, he was head of the Socio-Cultural Division of the Municipality of Moura (1986-90) and principal advisor to the Municipality of Mértola (1992-2018). In 1993-94 he was a guest assistant (medieval archeology) at the University of Algarve, and in 2006-08 he was a guest assistant professor at the same university.

He also worked as a guest assistant professor at the Universities of Évora (2008-11) and Nova de Lisboa (2009-13).

In 1989-90 and since 2006 he has been the scientific responsible for the project “Archaeological Intervention in Castelo de Moura”, as well as being co-scientific director of the archaeological excavations in Mértola since 1992. Between 2004-06 he was a member of the faculty of the Master's in “Recovery and Conservation of Built Heritage” at Instituto Superior Técnico/Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Rómulo de Carvalho Award (Research and Scientific Dissemination) from Universidade Lusíada (2001).

As part of his activities and research in history and archeology from late antiquity and the Islamic period, he has organized many scientific meetings, curated various exhibitions and coordinated numerous publications. He performed the functions of mayor of the Municipality of Moura (2013-17), after having been president of the Municipal Assembly of Moura (1997-2001) and councilor of the same Chamber (2005-13). Since April 2018, he has been the principal advisor to the Municipality of Lisbon.
