Siza Vieira, Souto Moura and Carrilho da Graça clarify that they do not dispute the design of the Tavira bridge

The three renowned architects say they did not issue "any value judgment on the project" when signing a manifesto that called for more reflection on the work

Architects Álvaro Siza Vieira, Eduardo Souto Moura and João Luís Carrilho da Graça came out today to stress that they do not question the design of the new bridge over the river Gilão, in the center of Tavira, nor did they issue «any value judgment on the project ", to sign the manifest “against the lack of reflection on the project of the new crossing over the Gilão river”.

On December 10, the Tavira Semper movement revealed, in a press release, that it read in the Municipal Assembly of Tavira a manifest signed by 24 architects, including Álvaro Siza Vieira, Eduardo Souto Moura and João Luís Carrilho da Graça.

The three renowned Portuguese architects now felt the need to «provide an explanation», which they sent to the Sul Informação.

“We share the concerns expressed in the manifesto, so we signed it. We did not issue any value judgment on the project, nor could we do so, for lack of sufficient information», the note reads.

The signatories of the clarification note say that, «therefore, the design of the new bridge, implemented in the same location as the existing ones, is not at issue, but the possible “lack of reflection” on the consequences of the urban framework of the intervention” – exactly as O Sul Informação reported at the time.

The manifesto “against the lack of reflection on the project of the new crossing over the Gilão river” can be read in full here.
