Quarteira's Education and Culture Center will have an auditorium and a public dance school

Work will cost around 7 million euros

The wish is already very old and will finally be fulfilled. The Quarteira Education and Culture Center will become a reality, and the works are expected to start in 2021. The space will incorporate a large auditorium, with 499 seats, as well as a public school dedicated to teaching dance.

The future Education and Culture Center of Quarteira will be built on land near the roundabout on Avenida Papa Francisco, next to Continente.

Ao Sul Informação, Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, did not hide his joy. «Quarteira always wanted and claimed a space for culture. Come late, but this will be one of the most outstanding equipment in the region», he guaranteed.

To get to this point – when there is already a project done – there was work done before.

After a public competition for the design of the Quarteira Education and Culture Center, promoted by the municipality and with the consultancy of the Southern Regional Section of the Ordem dos Arquitetos, the The jury, composed of architect Gonçalo Byrne, choreographer Rui Horta, and cultural and educational programming personalities, such as Manuel Rocha, José Bastos and João Aidos, decided “by clear unanimity” to award the 1st place to architect Pedro Domingos.

The winning proposal beat 28 competitors and is now on display at Galeria do Praça do Mar, so that people from Quarteira can see what the future infrastructure will be like. The show opened last Saturday, December 14th, and will be open until January 11th.

In this ocasion, Gonçalo Byrne, responsible for the Teatro das Figuras project, in Faro, referred that, «in addition to the buildings, the winning proposal creates a place, a place of reference» and has as its central point an interior garden, in the Arab tradition that has become evident in the Algarve.

In our newspaper, Vítor Aleixo praised the «several meritorious aspects of the project». «It is an innovative proposal, with this central square that will give access to both the auditorium and the public dance school. The project includes measures such as the use of rainwater and the buildings will be energetically sustainable», explained the mayor.

For Pedro Domingos, the author of the project, «in addition to attracting the normal users of the future building, it is intended that this be a Center at the scale of the city» and that it constitute «a public space that can be for everyone, having an autonomous use ».

One of the great features of this Education and Culture Center is that, in addition to an auditorium and a library, it will incorporate a public dance school.

«We quickly realized that a cultural center, by itself, was insufficient. Quarteira also needs to expand its offer in the field of public education and, after the success in Loulé with the Conservatório de Música de Loulé Francisco Rosado, the idea arose to create a public school for teaching dance here,” said Vítor Aleixo.

For the mayor, this was an “opportunity that we could not miss”, underlining the fact that “it is not a conventional school, but a space dedicated to teaching an artistic and creative discipline”.

If all goes well, guaranteed Vítor Aleixo to Sul Informação, «the works will start in 2021». "Now we're going to move on to the specialty phase, given the sophistication of the project," he explained.

This is a contract with a cost of around 7 million euros.
