Albufeira advances with video surveillance in Oura and downtown

Protocol has already been signed

The Municipality of Albufeira and the GNR signed a collaboration protocol, on the 4th of December, with the aim of moving forward with the video surveillance project in the municipality's urban area.

This protocol will cover the activation and implementation of the video surveillance system for public spaces in the areas of Oura and downtown, namely Avenida Sá Carneiro, Avenida Infante D. Henrique, Rua Almeida Garrett, Rua Alexandre Herculano, Rua da Vitória, Avenida da Liberdade, Avenida 25 de Abril, Largo Eng.o Duarte Pacheco, Rua Cândido dos Reis, Rua São Gonçalo de Lagos, Praça dos Pescadores, Cais Herculano, Travessa Cândido dos Reis, Rua 5 de Outubro, Rua Alves Correia and Rua da Liberdade.

José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, says that, «due to the economic dynamics and tourist importance of the municipality, Albufeira receives thousands of people throughout the year, especially between April and October and at the end of the year. which obliges us to take measures to guarantee public safety and tranquility, whether for visitors who come to us for a few days of rest and leisure, or for the local community itself».

José Carlos Rolo justifies the choice of the areas of Oura and downtown “because they are privileged places for passage, permanence and socializing, with added challenges in terms of maintaining public order and actions to protect and help people and goods”.

Also regarding the recent partnership, the mayor is keen to emphasize the work developed by the GNR in the municipality, stressing that the joint efforts between the Municipality and this Security Force is an asset for Albufeira, «since the security of the destination is considered one of the main motivations of those who visit us».

The implementation of the video surveillance system has the following main objectives: to promote the safety of people and goods, public and private, in the areas under surveillance; safeguarding the safety of the local population, tourists and visitors, continuously and permanently; the improvement of the conditions necessary for the effectiveness of civil protection operations in the municipality; the prevention of the practice of criminal offenses and other risk factors and the identification of people for the purpose of ascertaining possible criminal responsibilities.

Rogério Neto, councilor responsible for the Municipal Police and Security, points out that "these issues have always been a strong concern of the executive", recalling that already in 2018 the then mayor requested a meeting with the Assistant Secretary of State and Internal Administration, Isabel Oneto, with the purpose of evaluating the possibility of implementing video surveillance in Albufeira, having received at the time from the government official an indication that there was a "green light" to proceed with the process.

Under this Agreement, the municipality is responsible for bearing all costs with the installation and maintenance of the system, including signage in public places covered, ensuring the installation of the system monitoring center at the GNR headquarters, as well as guaranteeing that force of security its use.

GNR, in turn, must request authorization for the installation of the video surveillance system and its renewal, ensure its operability, through the provision of its own human and logistical resources, ensure the processing of data, in accordance with the legislation in force, guarantee the correct use of the system and cooperate with the Municipality in the implementation of complementary measures and mechanisms for the security and protection of people and property, as well as in terms of preventing the commission of crimes.
