Inserted in the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the University of Algarve, this conference “Stress in the Ocean. From multidisciplinary approaches to transdisciplinary research” «it also intends to make known some of CIMA's contributions to the development of a more solid science in the field of marine and environmental research, during its 20 years of existence», says UAlg.

Likewise, it is also intended to look at current and future trends - the recognition of the importance of solid scientific knowledge, the holistic and multidisciplinary nature of ocean affairs and the link between science and society - and reflect on the role that CIMA and, ultimately, Portugal can play in the coming decades.

According to Maria João Bebianno, coordinator of CIMA, “the Center has accompanied the important changes that have taken place in environmental and marine scientific research and that are currently shaping the future of science, particularly in three main areas: in solid scientific knowledge; in the deepening of the interrelationship between different areas of knowledge, in the need for an integrated holistic view of the state of the marine environment, as it has been promoted by the United Nations, and in the growing awareness of the need for a stronger link between science and society, highlighted in all relevant national and international forums and in the Sustainable Development Goals agenda».
