Ria Azul newspaper presented at a European event

João da Rosa is part of the Democratic Schools Network of the Council of Europe

The Jornal Ria Azul project, from the João da Rosa Schools Group, from Olhão, will be one of the participants in the work conference of the Democratic Schools Network of the Council of Europe, to be held on the 14th and 15th of November, in Florence (Italy). 

The Ria Azul will be part of an exhibition taking place at the University of Florence and will be represented by Professor Filipa Matos, who coordinated the project.

The teacher will participate in this conference, in which the work of 85 European schools will be presented. In addition to João da Rosa, there are two more Portuguese schools participating (Cerco Basic and Secondary School – Porto and the Caneças School Group – Odivelas).

All – the 85 – are part of the “Free to Speak, Safe to Learn – Democratic Schools for All” project for exemplifying good educational practices in defense of human rights, environmental and intercultural education and democratic values.

Through this project, the João da Rosa Schools Group was invited to join the Council of Europe's Democratic Schools Network, as it allows articulation with the local community and the mobilization of significant knowledge, skills and attitudes in the area of ​​Citizenship and defense democratic values, in particular with regard to Media Literacy and the Environment.

The Jornal Ria Azul project began in the previous school year, under the theme of curriculum flexibility "Ecosystems of Ria Formosa", aiming at the development and consolidation of a culture of citizenship in the school based on participation in an inclusive project of a transversal nature, of Media Literacy.

The Jornal Ria Azul intends to be an annual publication of an environmental nature, with continuity of cycle, based on the work carried out by the B class of the 8th grade.

Before the launch of the first edition, the young students visited the newsroom of the Sul Informação to get to know the environment of a newspaper.

The first issue of the project was, moreover, formally presented, by the students and the coordinating professor, at the National Meeting of Literacy for Media and Journalism, which took place on 16 September, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon.
