Artists of Faro open doors to reveal the secret of their studios

In the future, the initiative could also include other cities in the Algarve, such as Olhão and Loulé

The studios of 29 artists from Faro will have their doors open and the creators there Residents will be available to interact with those who visit them, during the Open Studios event, which will take place from November 22nd to 24th, in Faro.

This will be the first edition of an event that aims to make known the art that is made in the Algarve capital and its protagonists. In addition to the 18 creation spaces that will have their doors open, the public and the artists themselves will be able to count on a parallel program, where conversations can be held, workshops, performances e masterclasses.

O open studios Faro «it arose from the desire of two people with a taste for art, to create the dynamic that would allow to bring the Faro this event», explains Daniela Garcia, who co-organizes the initiative with Toma Svazaite and with the support in the production of Estrafega Produções.

«The basic idea is the creation of an artists' script, which will be open for a certain period. The event starts on the 22nd, a Friday, at 18:30 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, the 23rd and 24th, the studios will be open from 11:00 am to 17:00 pm”, he adds, speaking to Sul Informação.

This type of initiative, stressed Daniela Garcia, “is already taking place in many cities around the world, including Lisbon and Porto”.

On Saturday and Sunday, “anyone can visit the studios, without reservation and without prior appointment, and the artists will be present on the spot. This is one of the guarantees of Open Studios, the opportunity that is given to the public to meet the artists, to talk to them and, eventually, to watch the creative process».

Over there, there are many well-regarded artists, but also young talents.

In terms of names already established, the public can count on Manuel Baptista, Vicente de Brito, Hermínio Pinto da Silva, Cristiano Sheppard Cruz, Ana André, Vasco Vidigal, Rosa Trindade, Eduardo Pinto and Tó Quintas.

 

 

«We will also have younger artists, many of whom are linked to the 289 association, which brings together several creators linked to the Visual Arts course at the University of Algarve, namely Gustavo Jesus, Bertílio Martins, Milita Doré, Susana de Medeiros, Patrícia Serrão, Jorge Mestre Simão and Regis Vincent», framed Daniela Garcia.

«Then we have José Jesus, a young artist, but already with a lot of work developed, we have the Porta do Nascente gallery by the artist Dina Dias, the Corpo Atelier, the designer Bruno Boto, Rita Belchior, who has a space that is, to the At the same time, a gallery and a serigraphy and engraving workshop, Nicole Lissy, artist and responsible for Amarelarte, and Mafalda David, one of the young artists who contacted us through open call to participate,” he added.

Also part of the circuit will be the Ponto Iguais jewelery workshop, organized by Filomeno Pereira de Sousa, «in which works by five artists who are working with him in jewelery will also be exhibited: Ângela Gonçalves, Catarina Canelas, Manuela Xavier, Mónica Rodrigues and Pedro Vieira».

To reach this list of 29 artists, Daniela and Toma Svazaite had to do their homework. «In an initial phase, we carried out a survey, a mapping. We've been collecting contacts, asking the artists themselves who else could be integrated, and we've drawn up an initial list».

In parallel, an open call, in which anyone could propose to be present, to «try to reach out to emerging artists and to get us proposals that we would otherwise be able to get to know».

“In this first year, the initiative didn't have a big impact and there weren't many people showing interest, since our social networks still don't have many associated contacts. But we hope that, in the future, it will start to have more expression, also because we had several requests for participation after the closing of this year.pen call and that we are no longer able to include in the 2019 edition», explained Daniela Garcia.

The Open Studios program also has a special exhibition. «In addition to the 29 creators who will be in the studios, we have another artist, the Londoner Tom Leamon, who will come to the Algarve for the first time. We are going to present the exhibition with works by him “Memories From The Edge – A Time for Reflection”, curated by Open Studios, in a gallery Popup that will appear in a space that has been closed, on Rua Lethes».

Works by Tom Leamon, as well as some participating artists, will go on sale.

There will also be themed workshops for children and adults, performances and conversations.

On November 23, between 10:30 and 12:00, the artistic workshop “Arte e Natureza” will take place, designed for the whole family and promoted by Amarelarte.

At 18 pm, Miriam Nogueira Tavares moderates the conversation “The Southern Creation Circuit – Creation and Dissemination of Arts in the Algarve”, which will bring together António Lacerda and Pedro Cabral Santo, both from the University of Algarve, at the gallery Popup ARTatFARO.

On Sunday, at 11:00 am, a workshop Screen Printing on X-pass. at 14:30 pm, new workshop, this time on the theme “A Space for Rehearsal. Body: membrane/skin/house/shelter/territory/landscape/border", by Susana de Medeiros (DeVIR CAPa)

On the two days, between 11:00 and 17:00, Gustavo Jesus will present the performance “Infinitely finite or as Penelope would have done if she had a knitting machine”, at Associação 289.

«On Saturday, at the end of the day, we will have a convivial party at the Associação Recreativa e Cultural de Músicos, in Vila-Adentro de Faro. On Sunday, there will be a closing party at Associação 289, in Pontes de Marchil», added the co-organizer of the event.

In the future, the idea is also to promote the initiative in other cities.

«Throughout the route we've covered so far, we've received several suggestions, namely Loulé and Olhão, which we know are cities with resident artists and a great cultural dynamic. So we would like to include them next year. The idea is to do it on different weekends and not crowd everything on the same date», announced Daniela Garcia.
