Volunteer Architects Help Rebuild Homes in Monchique

The Order will make available to the municipality its program “Volunteer Architects in Support of Emergencies (AVAE)”

Volunteer architects will design the houses to be rebuilt in Monchique, following the great fire of August 2018. The protocol is signed this Tuesday, November 5th, at 13 pm, in the Algarve, between the Southern Regional Section ( SRS) of the Order of Architects and the City Council.

Basically, the Order will make available to the municipality its program “Volunteer Architects in Support of Emergencies (AVAE)” which provides the municipality with the qualifications and technical-professional experience of a scholarship of architects available to help in the reconstruction of the heritage, such as first dwellings.

The signing of the protocol takes place at the Monchique Chamber, with the presence of Paula Torgal, president of the SRS of the Ordem dos Arquitetos, and Rui André, president of the municipality.

The large fires that, at the beginning of August 2018, hit the municipality of Monchique with greater severity, causing a series of high damages and losses in first homes.

It is with a view to rebuilding and rehabilitating this heritage that the SRS of the Ordem dos Arquitetos is now articulated with the municipality of Monchique.

This program was launched in 2017, on the initiative of the South and North regional sections of the Order of Architects, within the scope of their attribution of representation of the Order in the respective regions, and in response to the scourge of the fires that ravaged the center of the country that year.

The Fellowship of Voluntary Architects to Support Emergencies is, moreover, open to all members of the Order.

With this initiative, the Order of Architects can act, whenever necessary, in disaster situations involving urban planning and construction in the national territory, ensuring the necessary skills and technical assistance in matters relating to architecture and the exercise of profession of architect in emergency scenarios.

Paula Torgal, president of the SRS of the Ordem dos Arquitetos, says that «the appeal launched over these two years by the Regional Sections to Architects, and which has responded with their enormous availability and immense solidarity, reinforces the role of architecture as a structuring element of society, through voluntary and altruistic participation in contributing to urban planning with the most fragile populations and in the search for technical solutions that, in the future, may reduce the impact of new catastrophes».
