Portimão starts the school year with improvements to the school park

The Chamber also bets on bringing civil protection to all schools

Portimão started the current school year with an improved school park and with civil protection as a complementary educational activity in all educational establishments. The Portimonense Chamber officially kicked off the school year with a ceremony to welcome the teachers and pay tribute to six retired teachers, held at the Hotel Pestana Alvor Praia, where it took the opportunity to present some news.

Three of them were the renovated 1st cycle Basic Schools (EB1) of Chão das Donas, Coca Maravilhas and Major David Neto.

In all, the City Council spent around 475 thousand euros on the interventions it made in these three educational establishments, which together host close to a thousand students. Part of this amount, 203 million euros, was guaranteed by the European Union, through the CRESC Algarve 2020 Operational Programme.

In the case of the refurbishment of the EB1 in Chão das Donas (150 children) and EB1 Coca Maravilhas (338 children), “the old, inadequate and damaged roofs of both school buildings were replaced. With this intervention, students can benefit from better environmental conditions and thermal comfort, favoring learning conditions», according to the Municipality of Portimão.

«As for the interventions carried out at EB1 Major David Neto, they made it possible to improve the conditions for the practice of recreational and sports activities in the curricular and extra-curricular scope of the approximately 500 students who attend this educational establishment, which is now equipped with physical conditions to the practice of physical-motor activities and an accessible playground, without barriers and conditions that interfere with the students' safety conditions. New leisure and picnic areas were also created», added the municipality.

 

 

At the ceremony, which brought together 230 teachers, the program “School and Risks – Preparing to Protect” was also presented, «which involves 19 partner entities, 33 teaching establishments, public and private, and 467 classes. to more than ten thousand people in the 2019/2020 school year».

Portimão «has been promoting in recent school years an offer of complementary activities of educational action during the curricular period, with several projects being developed, including the program now disclosed, under the responsibility of the Municipal Civil Protection, which for the fifth consecutive year has prepared an awareness-raising program aimed at the school community, having reached since 2014 more than 40 thousand people».

Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, highlighted the importance of this project in educating children and young people to risk and stressed that teachers contribute, «decisively, to building citizens, a determining condition for the future of all, because the best we have are the people and if we don't have qualified and participative people, we don't have anything».
