Portimão "dresses" in yellow in the name of suicide prevention

The initiatives in Portimão are part of the campaign organized worldwide

Portimão participates in the “September Amarelo” campaign, with a set of activities and actions to raise awareness of suicide prevention.

These days, several public buildings will put yellow stripes on their façades, namely the Paços do Concelho, the Cruz da Parteira and Coca Maravilhas Community Centers and the Senior Social Center of Portimão, Aldeia das Sobreiras and Bairro do Pontal, CPCJ - Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth of Portimão and the Parish Councils of Portimão, Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande.

The Museum of Portimão will be illuminated in shades of yellow, in an alert for this suicide prevention campaign.

The “Suicide Prevention Month” aims to make the population aware of the issue of suicide, “a problem with some relevance in the Algarve”, says the municipality.

The initiatives in Portimão are part of the campaign organized worldwide by the International Association for the Prevention of Suicide, which has the support in Portugal of the National Plan for Mental Health, the Portuguese Society of Suicidiology and the National Plan for the Prevention of Suicide (PNPS) of the General Directorate of Health.

With the aim of transmitting knowledge on the subject, the community mental health teams will carry out various awareness-raising actions in the community in general, and in particular in the school community, with actions being scheduled in the Portimão Market, on the 20th and 30th of September, as well as an action at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes School, in Portimão.

Throughout the month, there is an exhibition in the atrium of the Hospital de Portimão, with information on depression, suicide prevention and stigma reduction in mental illness.

Also within the scope of this awareness-raising campaign, Portimão will be the starting point for the 1st Bike Ride “Pedalar pela Vida”, part of the global initiative “Cycle around the globe”.

There will be two stages, scheduled for the 14th and 21st. The first will connect Portimão and Monchique, passing through the municipalities of Lagoa and Silves, while the second will connect Portimão to Sagres, with stops in Lagos and Vila do Bispo. This initiative also has the seal of Portimão European City of Sport and has free registration through the Facebook page from the email [email protected]

To close the initiative, on World Mental Health Day, which marks the 10th of October, a public debate will be held on “Promotion of Mental Health and Prevention of Depression and Suicide”, at the Municipal Theater of Portimão (TEMPO), das 18:00 pm to 20:00 pm.

These activities and awareness actions will be promoted by the Psychiatry Service of the Hospital Unit of Portimão, of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA), with the support of the Municipality of Portimão.
