New rules for withdrawing money and making payments

The entry into force in Portugal of a European directive on payment services requires enhanced security measures.

As of next Saturday, bank books can no longer be used to withdraw money, for example. The magnetic strips of debit and credit cards are no longer used for payments, and only the chip can be used.

The changes do not stop there. Matrix cards (codes), which have been used to secure online bank account transactions, will no longer serve. Access to the bank account via the Internet or via mobile phone applications requires an extra measure of access. In general, banks should start sending a code by written message to customers' mobile phones when they want to access their accounts, as an extra security measure.
