Quarteira: Nearly 300 kilos of sardines and mackerel seized as they fled the auction

50 year old man has been identified

137 kilos of sardines and 150 kilos of mackerel were seized by the GNR last Wednesday, 21 August, in Quarteira, for fleeing the auction.

The seizure was made by the Coastal Control Unit, through the Subdetachment of Coastal Control of Olhão, “as part of a patrol and surveillance action, with the objective of preserving marine species and safeguarding the fauna and flora of the Ria Formosa”.

During the operation, a 50-year-old man was identified and an administrative offense was drawn up for fleeing the auction. This offense is punishable up to a maximum amount of 3740 euros, if the offender is an individual, or 44891 euros, in the case of a legal person.

The fish, after being subject to sanitary inspection by the veterinary authority, was sold at auction.

The GNR recalls that “the system for the sale of fresh fish provides that the first sale must be carried out at auction, through the auction system. The basis of this regime is based, above all, on the intention to maintain and preserve a price regulating mechanism in this sector by concentrating supply and demand, by transparency in the constitution of prices and by the hygiene control of fish».
