Doctors who, until September, come to reinforce the National Health Service (SNS) in the Algarve «even have» free accommodation. The guarantee was given this Friday, 12 July, by minister Marta Temido, after a complaint from an anesthesiologist who was asked to pay a daily fee of 20 euros in a shared apartment.

The situation, also denounced by the PSD/Algarve, was calling into question the measure, included in an order of 6 June, by the Ministry of Health, which aims to attract more doctors to the region, with the benefit of free accommodation.

«What happened is that one of the doctors will have obtained a standard answer that is the reference value for the use of the rooms, without realizing, by mistake, that it came under the exceptional regime. Doctors even have free residency», he said. Marta Temido, Minister of Health, to journalists, on the sidelines of a visit to the Hospital of Faro.

Paulo Morgado, president of the Algarve Regional Health Administration (ARS), said, in turn, that the "doctor will not have adequately explained the situation".

«The doctor contacted the Hospital and did not contact the ARS. If he had done so, he would have had the adequate answer», said Paulo Morgado.

As for the reinforcement of doctors for the summer, the president of ARS Algarve said that «there have been contacts of some clinicians that we are still analyzing». It is certain that, for now, there is still no doctor who has taken up duties under this reinforcement.

“Some are doctors who are not linked to the NHS and who are service providers, which has been good because, in previous years, this had not happened. These professionals are hired in a different way and they are also the ones we count on to reinforce the scales», he added.

Linked to the SNS, there have been only two candidacies so far.

This is an 'individually' managed process so that the situation is attractive to both the ARS and the doctors.

Upon publication of this order, Roque da Cunha, president of the Independent Union of Physicians (SIM), considered the Sul Informação, that measure of free accommodation was no more than 'political marketing'.
