Young people from Loulé become forest watchers during their holidays

Action is aimed at young people between 12 and 17 years old

Young volunteers will once again patrol the rural area of the municipality of Loulé, during school holidays, in the 12th edition of the program “Forest Surveillance – Youth Volunteering".

The initiative, promoted by the Câmara de Loulé, through its Municipal Civil Protection Service, is aimed at young people aged between 12 and 17 years.

The activity takes place in July and August. During this period, a total of nine brigades will be formed, composed of seven elements accompanied by a monitor.

Every fortnight, two brigades will operate on alternate days, monitoring the county's extensive forest area.

The objectives of this program are, as explained by the municipality, «the prevention and detection of forest fires, awareness and information to the population, interaction with the elderly and isolated population and learning related to forest fires».

Outdoor walks also encourage “interpersonal relationships between the volunteers who participate. On the other hand, this project emphasizes the importance of the forest and the environment», adds the Câmara de Loulé.

This program has the support of the parish councils of Alte, Ameixial, Salir and União de parishes Querença, Tôr and Benafim and will culminate on August 30, with a moment of interaction between all participants and stakeholders, where the young volunteers will receive their nature watchers diploma.
