School of Portimão says again if “There is UV on the beach”

Project Grouping of Schools Manuel Teixeira Gomes enters its fourth year of existence

The “Há UV na praia” project is once again present on the beaches of Portimão, Lagoa and Lagos, to alert bathers to the level of ultraviolet rays that is felt.

This is an initiative of the Manuel Teixeira Gomes School Group, from Portimão, which is present for the fourth consecutive year on the beaches of Rocha and Vau (Portimão), Praia Grande (Lagoa), Meia Praia and Porto de Mós beach (Lagos) .

Through five flags with five distinct colors, each relative to a UV index, those responsible for the project inform bathers daily about the intensity of this radiation. The higher the index, the more care you need to take.

In the midst of all this, the beach concessions «are the fundamental link for the success of the project», bearing in mind that it is those responsible for raising the flags that indicate the solar UV radiation status «with the appropriate color according to the variation of the ultraviolet index throughout the day'.

After three years of project implementation and data collection, it was already possible to reach some conclusions. « The maximum peak of iUV (ultraviolet index) very high (red flag) was registered in the months of June and July of the summer 2016. In the summer of 2017 the maximum iUV value occurred only in the month of September. None of the summer months of 2018 registered, significantly, very high iUV», according to those responsible for the project.

Now, the idea is to extend the project to other beaches in the Algarve, to make them «safer, in order to develop appropriate behaviors for a sun exposure that is friendly to our body».
