The Government is discriminating against the Algarve and putting "at risk the care of pregnant women" in the region by not opening vacancies for the specialties of pediatrics and obstetrics at the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA), accused the Independent Union of Doctors (SIM) .

According to the union, "although the Maternity Hospital in Portimão is at risk of closing due to a lack of pediatricians and the obstetrics lack of 18 doctors in its staff and not having doctors to ensure more than 50% of the emergency scale, it is with surprise and concern that the Ministry of Health has not allocated vacancies in need for these specialties at the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA), in 2019».

An “incomprehensible and discriminatory decision for the Algarve region”, which “also occurs with other specialties, such as orthopedics, which has only 7 of the 23 necessary doctors in the table”.

«The Algarve does not accept being treated by the Government in this discriminatory way and demands that these extremely needy specialties in CHUA be included in the map of needy vacancies for this year», concludes YES.
