PSD/Portimão strange «deafening silence» of the Mayor about closing the maternity hospital

Gone are the days of precautionary measures and demonstrations outside the hospital, says the PSD

The PSD/Portimão is surprised by the «deafening silence» of the mayor and deputies of the PS, Left Bloc and CDU, in the Municipal and Republic Assembly, about the closing of the maternity hospital in the city, in force until Tuesday, due to the lack of pediatricians.

"Once, from the Mayor a deputies fond of the acronyms that sustain the Government of António Costa, all were extremely active in speaking and defending local and regional health, also presenting precautionary measures e including promoting demonstrations at the door of the Hospital in question», stress the social democrats in a note signed by Carlos Gouveia Martins, president of the PSD council.

“Now, today, where is the voice of the Portimonenses and Algarve socialists?” he asks. For the social democrats, "silence before the government's political power only represents that they are now forgetting their duties towards the people of Portimo and the struggle for a NHS that works at the service of people, with quality, accessibility and free of charge."

«It is not time to lose the voice that once had so much. It is time for certain political leaders to be coherent and join forces, together with all the people of Portimão, to the detriment of partisan acronyms, to defend Health in Portimão, Barlavento and Algarve».

In its statement, the PSD/Portimão expressed "concern" with the closure of the maternity hospital in this city until next Tuesday, the 11th, regretting that, "at the threshold of the time of year when the entire region doubles - and it even triples – its occupation”, there are already “signs of ruptures in essential areas of hospital care in CHUA, affecting not only residents but tourists who, well, this week have already opted for a vacation or a mini-vacation. in this region and in particular in Barlavento».

The Portimonenses social democrats point out that "in this wide geographic area, being without pediatric response and for women in labor for 4 days at the Hospital do Barlavento Algarvio is alarming."

For parturients or children in a more serious condition, there are only two solutions left: «go to the already saturated Emergency Room of the Hospital de Faro, which, in the case of an Algarvian resident in Odeceixe, means an hour and a half to two hours of travel and 1 kilometers round trip, paying for the taxi or ambulance or fuel out of pocket, instead of 30 to 2 minutes and 00 kilometers each way. and go back to the Hospital de Portimão's Emergency Room” or “go, once again, to one of the hospitals of the Hospital Particulares do Algarve group, in Lagos or Portimão, paying what you are constitutionally entitled to”.

The PSD/Portimão announces that it will "present in its own place the request for a local hearing of those involved in this new health failure in Portimon and the Algarve".

The note ends by expressing "solidarity and understanding with health professionals who, daily and with these public constraints, do not stop working in a selfless way."

The situation of the lack of pediatricians in the Algarve, especially in the hospital in Portimão, is not new. In 2014, still during the PSD/CDS Government and with Pedro Nunes in the administration of the then Centro Hospitalar do Algarve, it had already been suggested the transitional closure of maternity, which led to a demonstration at the door of the hospital unit in Portimo, promoted by the Citizens' Movement for the Defense of Public Health Services of the Algarve and the National Health Service Users Commission.
