The President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in his capacity as Grand Master of all Portuguese Honorific Orders, will distinguish the Algarvean D. António Carrilho, Bishop Emeritus of Funchal, with the degree of Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique .

The announcement was made today, in a statement, by the representative of the Republic in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The Order of Infante D. Henrique is intended to “distinguish those who have provided relevant services to Portugal, in the country and abroad, as well as services in the expansion of Portuguese culture or for the knowledge of Portugal, its history and its values”.

Maria do Carmo Melvill Araújo, Associação Recreio Musical União Mocidade and Orquestra Clássica da Madeira will also be distinguished.

The decorations will be imposed by the representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, by delegation of the President of the Republic, in a solemn ceremony to be held at 11:30 am, on the 10th of June — Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities Day — on São Lourenço Palace, in the Madeiran capital.

In a statement sent to Ecclesia Agency, the Diocese of Funchal, which in April honored D. António Carrilho for the 12 years he was responsible for this local Church and for his 77 years of life, “rejoices strongly with this distinction” granted to bishop emeritus.

On 12 January, the Pope accepted the resignation presented by D. António Carrilho as bishop of Funchal, who in 2017 reached the age determined by Canon Law (75 years) for resignation to the position.

The prelate was appointed by the now Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, in March 2007, to succeed Bishop Teodoro de Faria.

D. António Carrilho was ordained a priest in 1965 and spent 12 years as a priest in the Algarve. He was appointed canon of the Cathedral Chapter of the Cathedral of Faro on March 25, 1996 and took office on February 2 of that year.

After that period, he was integrated in several services of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference in Lisbon, namely as director of the National Secretariat for Christian Education and the General Secretariat.

In 1999 he was ordained bishop in the church of São Pedro do Mar, in Quarteira, with the episcopal motto 'Faz-te ao Largo', after having been appointed as auxiliary of Porto, where he spent eight years.

The current bishop of Funchal, D. Nuno Brás, took office as the 33rd diocesan bishop on February 17th.
