Portimão hosts the opening ceremony of the Quelfes Games

Quelfes games will run until May 24th

The opening ceremony of the X Quelfes Games takes place on the 10th of May, from 15 pm, at Praça 00º de Maio, in Portimão.

The event, which will last until May 24, will unfold into two weeks of intense sporting activity, involving students from the 3rd and 4th years of the 1st cycle of Basic Education from Portugal and Spain, in a special interaction and experiences associated with the values ​​of the Olympism, this year for the first time with stages in the Barlavento Algarvio (opening ceremony in Portimão and athletics aspect in Parchal).

With regard to the ceremony scheduled for Portimão, the program starts at 15 pm, with the arrival of the flame of the Quelfes Games and concentration, at the Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo, of students participating in the final of the 00rd School Basketball Tournament in Portimão, an initiative of the Portimonense that covers about 3 boys and girls from the 1000st cycle, representing all School Groups in the municipality.

From there, around 300 children will parade to Praça 1º de Maio, where, at 15:30 pm, an olive tree will be planted, with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, followed by the reading of the call to the Games, and the pyre will also be lit. symbolic by the president of the Portuguese Olympic Committee José Manuel Constantino and the mayor of Portimão Isilda Gomes.

Product of the combination of efforts at the highest level, and already distinguished with a vote of praise by the Olympic Committee of Portugal in 2015, the Quelfes Games also aim to provide an enriching educational experience, through the presentation of sport as a conveyor belt of values and a key element of a philosophy of life oriented towards personal and social development.

The event is organized by its own committee, which involves the Associação Jogos de Quelfes, the Academia Olímpica de Portugal, the Regional Delegation of Education of the Algarve and the Regional Directorate of the Algarve of the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, among others. institutions, counting this year with the support of the Municipality of Portimão.
