Plastic crisis debated at a meeting at the University of Algarve

Meeting will bring together representatives from different sectors of civil society

Debating the plastics crisis and launching initiatives for a “healthy Algarve +” is the objective of a meeting that will take place on June 6, at 10:00 am in the Grande Auditório de Gambelas of the University of Algarve, in Faro, which will bring together representatives from different sectors of society.

The “Algarve + healthy” event begins with the official launch of the Campaign “Plásticos à vista – Get Rid of this Species” Campaign, an initiative by DECO/Algarve with the objective of sensitizing consumers to reduce plastic consumption.

At 10:30 am, marine plastics in the Algarve will be discussed by representatives of various sectors of society, including Adelino Canário (director of the Center for Sciences of the Sea - CCMar), Carolina Gouveia, representative of DECO, a student from the Group of Schools Tomás Cabreira, Paulo Gouveia da Costa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of FAGAR, João Fernandes, President of the Algarve Tourism Region, José Pacheco, Director of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) in the Algarve, Jorge Botelho, President of AMAL, and Alexandra Teodósio, Vice-Dean of UAlg.

At 12:15 pm, in the Atrium of the Great Auditorium, the exhibition “Plástico à vista!” will be inaugurated, an artistic interpretation of the plastic crisis, developed by students from the Tomás Cabreira School Group.

For the event's organizers “the plastic crisis is one of the biggest challenges that society is currently facing, with devastating effects on the Ocean”.

Thus, the main objective of this initiative, organized by UAlg, CCMar and Deco/Algarve, «is to discuss this issue and enable the exchange of ideas among all participants».
