Tradição dos Maios re-colors the edges of the EN125 between Marim and Alfandanga

Dolls are made in secret and displayed throughout May 1st

For the 35th consecutive year, Futebol Clube de Bias recovers its tradition and organizes another competition for Maios, which takes place, as usual, on May 1st, throughout the day, along Estrada Nacional 125. The awards ceremony will take place on the 4th, from 21 pm, with a ball held at the club's headquarters.

Taking place between Marim and Alfandanga, the 35th Concurso de Maios has the support of the Municipality of Olhão and the council's parish councils and invites all residents and visitors to participate in an initiative of great symbolic value. The typical spring flowers adorn the Maios or Mayas.

Along the EN125, but also in other places in the interior of the county, there are authentic pilgrimages to enjoy the Maios.

The initiative is repeated year after year, always with the objective of showing the puppets, which are built in secret for months, with themes always linked to the locality and the products of the land, and where there is no lack of beautiful flowers from the countryside. Many of the Maios are accompanied by popular blocks, some of them satirical.

This tradition makes thousands of people pass through the municipality of Olhão on this day, to see the authentic works of art that are only exhibited on this date.

The origin of the Maios or Maias tradition is lost in time and can have several explanations. According to some, Maia was a rye straw doll, around which there were dances throughout the night of the first day of May, in a rite to celebrate Spring.

In Olhão, tradition is maintained with the dedication to building and decorating these typical dolls to show those passing by on the EN125, where there is also no lack of typical snacks of the season to taste, such as snails.
