Sculpture and Meeting celebrate the Cape Verdean community of Loulé

Inauguration of sculpture, mass and party are on the program

Another meeting of Cape Verdeans and their friends will take place in the city of Loulé, next Wednesday, May 1st, Labor Day. It will be a «moment of meeting and conviviality between migrants residing in this municipality, but also of exaltation of African culture», stresses the Municipality of Loulé.

In the year in which this event celebrates 25 years of existence – Silver Wedding, the Municipality is once again associated with the commemorations, to “honor not only the Africans but also the fifty migrant communities residing in the largest municipality in the Algarve, who, in their day-to-day, they contribute to the development of this territory».

Thus, the party starts at 11:00 am, with the traditional mass at the Shrine of the Sovereign Mother, where the various communities that, at this moment, are keen to pay homage to Our Lady of Piety, Patron Saint of Loulé, will be represented. The Mass will be said by Canon César Chantre, a prominent figure in the Catholic Church in the Algarve, himself of Cape Verdean origin.

At 12:30 pm, one of the highlights of the day takes place: the inauguration of the sculpture “Ponto de Encontro”, at the roundabout next to Urbanização das Romeirinhas, Avenida Laginha Serafim.

Authored by the artist Paulo Neves, this sculptural work intends to «transmit precisely the diversity of peoples and cultures that the Municipality of Loulé welcomes and that reflect a humanist and integrative society, marked by the values of tolerance and respect for others, regardless of ethnicity, color, creed or religion».

Then, from 13:00, the party takes place in the Hall of Celebrations of Loulé, with lots of music and arts that express well all the African cultural richness.

The typical gastronomy will also be highlighted, such as cachupa or Cape Verdean sweets. The musical animation will be in charge of the artist Zé Espanhol, who will bring the warm sounds of Cape Verde.

Since 1994, the Cape Verdean community, one of the most numerous and dynamic in the Municipality of Loulé, has held this Festival, in close collaboration with the Catholic Church and with the support of the Municipality of Loulé.
