Economy of the Sea: exports increase 25%, merchant marine rises 94%

Port activity and cruise movement also grew

Exports of goods from the marine sector in 2018 registered an increase of 25% compared to 2015, according to the analysis of the Ministry of the Sea Blue Economy Observatory.

Last year, the blue sector registered more than 2 billion euros in exports (€2 186 740 724), almost 500 million more than the value reached in 2015 (€ 1 753 761 953).

 

The growth of the national Blue Economy can also be seen in the Gross Value Added (GVA) of companies in the Maritime Sector. According to the analysis of the Blue Economy Observatory of the Ministry of the Sea, in 2017, this value represented 3,4% of the GVA of the companies of the National Economy.

For comparison purposes, in 2015, the same indicator stood at 2,86%, thus denoting an increase in the order of 30% in two years. According to data from Blue Economy Observatory, there is “a route to sustained growth”.

The growth rate of the GVA of companies in the Blue Economy in 2017 is set at 14,94, practically double the growth rate of the GVA of companies in the National Economy (7,85%) and the rate of the four previous years.

 

Among the areas of the sector with the greatest growth between 2015 and 2018, the merchant marine stands out in particular, with an increase of 94% in the number of ships and 269% in deadweight (DWT), corresponding to over 14 thousand tons.

The port activity also registered a remarkable development in the same period, with an increase of 56% in the movement of Ro-Ro cargo and 20% in the movement of containerized cargo.

Finally, there is also the growth of cruise activity on the continent, with an increase in passengers of around 21%, and the increase in exports of fishing products by 21%, corresponding to an increase in the volume of exports of almost 200 million euros.
