Alcalar returns to prehistory

Entrance is free

The Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, in Portimão, will once again be the stage, on the 4th of May, from 10:00 am to 17:30 pm, of a journey back to the times of Prehistory.

During the day, participants will be able to get to know, in an interactive way, the daily life of prehistoric populations, through a diverse set of practical and didactic workshops representing hunting, pottery, engraving, weaving, tool making, production processes. carving, preparing and cooking food, brewing prehistoric beer, agricultural tools and ornaments, transporting large monoliths and milling.

«This year, the day will be animated by the presence of Escola da Bemposta and its theater group, who will recreate everyday scenes from those millenary times», says the Câmara de Portimão.

Experimental archeology once again marks the offer of this initiative with a set of proposals that will allow the visitor to participate and watch the preparation of food until its preparation.

Seafood (cockles, clams) and fish are also part of the menu that the most curious can taste. Without matches or knives, the team, specialized in this type of experimentation, will make the fire and prepare food as if we went back 5000 years, using stone tools.

The historical recreation, which allows hundreds of families to participate in activities that were usual in prehistory, in a fun and educational way, is part of the set of initiatives that have been developed since 2006 by the Portimão Museum, in the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar (National Monument). It is a day of experiences based on the studies already carried out on the Alcalarense territory and the work carried out by researchers from the universities of Stuttgart, Cordoba and the Archeology Center of the University of Lisbon.

Once again, the recreation has a financial support from the application held by the Group of Friends of the Portimão Museum to the DiVaM Program of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and with the help of various entities and a group of volunteers who usually collaborate with the museum team in promoting these activities.

“A day in Prehistory” is part of the 11th anniversary celebrations of the Portimão Museum and has the support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, the Municipality of Monchique and the Parish Councils of Portimão, Alvor, Mexilhoeira Grande and Group of Friends of the Museum of Portimão.
