João Guerreiro reappointed as a member of the National Council for the Environment

João Guerreiro has been a member of the structure for 10 years

João Guerreiro, former rector of the University of Algarve (UAlg) and full professor of this institution, was once again appointed by the Government to the National Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development (CNADS).

The decision was taken at yesterday's Council of Ministers meeting.

The Algarvian academic, owner of a vast curriculum and who recently coordinated, the independent commissions of inquiry to the great fires that ravaged different parts of the country, I was already part of this council, which has 35 members, part of which are appointed by the Government and the others representing civil society, namely environmental organizations, associations of entrepreneurs and different sectors of activity, unions, orders and universities, among others.

Created in 1997, following the Rio Conference, CNADS was chaired for 20 years by Professor Mário Ruivo, who died in 2017. Currently, the holder of this position is Filipe Duarte Santos, considered the greatest Portuguese expert on climate change.

João Guerreiro, on the other hand, has been a member of this entity “for ten years”. “CNADS produces opinions and recommendations regarding public policies in the environment and sustainable development sectors”, revealed the former UAlg rector.

Second the organism's website, the opinions are specifically related to «the bases of environmental policy, strategic plans and programs, conventions and other legal instruments that in this matter embody international commitments to be signed by the Portuguese State and the monitoring of community and international policy, in particular the cooperation policy within the framework of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP)».

The CNADS is also responsible for “monitoring the application and development of the provisions of the Environmental Law and issuing an opinion on the National Environmental Policy Plan and the National Strategy for Nature Conservation”.

«To give some examples of what my activity has been, in the council, I helped to produce an opinion on forest management. I was also involved in a process linked to the law on maritime spatial planning. Now, I am working with a group that is working on the National Plan for Energy and Climate 2030”, he exemplified.

In addition to João Guerreiro, the Government appointed Maria Teresa Lencastre de Melo Breyner Andresen, José Joaquim Dinis Reis, Maria do Rosário Pinto Alves, Paulo Magalhães and Miguel Araújo as members of CNADS.
