João Guerreiro, former rector of the University of Algarve, is the chairman of the independent technical committee that will assess and investigate what happened in the fires in Pedrógão Grande. 

The name of the former president of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) was chosen by the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities.
