Monchique Camellia Festival changes format and house

Concerto by Rão Kyao closes the program

Monchique will show its camellias again, on the 23rd and 24th of March, this time in a street festival format. The event that the Monchiquense Chamber has dedicated, for five years, to this emblematic flower that gives color to many gardens in the municipality will be held, for the first time, in Jardim da Vila and will have «a different appearance».

«Like the flower, the festival itself is constantly changing and its nature requires changes in its format, location and program», explains the Monchique Chamber, which even considered holding the event in Caldas de Monchique. Jardim da Vila is next to the municipal swimming pools.

The festival, after all, will take place in the center of the village of Monchique and will have Rao Kyao as the headliner, in a concert that the Municipality of Monchique says will be "unmissable".

«Making use of the bamboo flute and the saxophone, he found inspiration in Indian, Arabic, African and Chinese music, thus re-establishing the lost link between the Portuguese musical tradition and the Orient», according to the autarchy.

The festival will also have «constant running animation», poetry, performances and theatre, a handicraft and confectionery exhibition and, of course, many camellias, either in the exhibition that will be promoted, or in the village gardens, where the usual one will pass. Camellia Route.

But beware: this tour that will lead to the discovery of the private and public gardens where the camellias are in evidence is mandatory, open until the 21st of March and is limited to 40 participants. Registration via email: [email protected] .

The public visiting Monchique, these days, can also participate in the initiatives “Ilustra-te” and “Festival Comvida”, a live demonstration of the work of the artist Madalena Telo.

According to Monchique City Council, "as the camellia is a natural, cultural and heritage icon of the county, it made no sense that there was not a moment in its homage and contemplation".

After five years, the municipality says it is certain that the Festival das Camelias «is already a reference» and that it is another element that contributes to the designation of “Jardim do Algarve”, attributed to Monchique.

It was, moreover, «based on the principle that Monchique has differentiating and unique elements» that he considered that he would be able «to organize something distinct, elegant and dignified. We are sure that we have fallen in love with all visitors, participants and collectors and it is based on this premise that we take off for this 5th edition».
