Carnival, Smuggling and much more liven up the Algarve in March

Carnival parades and the Smuggling Festival are two of the events that appear in another edition of RTA's “Guia Algarve”

March will be a month marked by Carnival revelry and smuggling, but also by knowledge and flavors, traditions, sports and a lot of culture. The Algarve Tourism Region has already launched the March edition of the “Guia Algarve”, which will help residents and visitors not to miss out on what is happening in the region.

Altogether, there are more than a hundred initiatives suggested by the “Guia Algarve” in March, including music, theatre, exhibitions, dance, sports and fairs.

In this edition, the focus is on the carnival celebrations, from the traditional privateers to the funeral of Entrudo, which take place between the 2nd and 6th of March, in various locations from the coast to the Algarve mountains. The secular Carnaval de Loulé, the “Carnaval Trapalhão” of Ferreiras, the Carnaval de Portimão and the Carnaval de Altura are some of the initiatives highlighted by the RTA.

The guide also highlights the Monchique Sausages Fair that, between March 2nd and March 3rd, celebrates the flavors and traditions of this mountain village. Thousands of visitors are expected at this event, whose protagonists are sausages, as well as honey, medronho, sweets and handicrafts. The fair's program is composed of performances by fado singer Carminho (on the 2nd, at 22 pm) and by Sara Tavares (on the 00rd, at 3 pm).

Sport is also on the cover of the «Algarve Guide» with the 7th edition of the Algarve Bike Challenge, the most important and well-known staged mountain biking event that, between the 8th and 10th, will take hundreds of cyclists to travel through the Algarve countryside.

And, of course, there are the proposals of the “365Algarve” program, among which the Smuggling Festival, which takes place in Alcoutim (Portugal) and Sanlúcar de Guadiana (Spain), between March 29 and 31 stands out. they are invited to (re)live the smuggling traditions of cross-border villages through lots of entertainment, history, arts and culture.

 

 

«Cristina Branco (on the 1st, 21:30 pm, Cine-Teatro Louletano in Loulé), the prestigious Glenn Miller Orchestra (on the 10th, 17:00 pm, Teatro das Figuras in Faro), Carolina Deslandes (on the 22nd, 21:30 pm, at the Municipal Auditorium of Olhão) and Luís Represas (on the 22nd, 21:30 pm, at the Albufeira Municipal Auditorium) are some of the consecrated names that will pass through the Algarve during this month», according to RTA.

Also in music, the Algarve will receive artists from all over the world in events such as the 3rd International Guitars Festival Faro (between the 3rd and the 31st) and the XXVIII International Accordion Gala in Albufeira (from March 14th to April 4th), with shows taking place in several locations in these two municipalities.

«For the entire month, humor will be king. The Centro Cultural de Lagos receives the FEST'RIR with Bruno Nogueira (day 01), Salvador Martinha (day 02) and Aldo Lima (16th); the Arade Congress Center is taken over by João Baião and Marina Mota in the play “I'll go out next time, how about you?”, on the 15th; and the Carlos do Carmo Municipal Auditorium in Lagoa is the stage for HumorFest'2019 on the 16th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 29th and 30th. All these shows will start at 21:30 pm», added the RTA.

Fine art lovers have not been forgotten and will have new exhibitions available, namely the “On the path of the Iberian lynx” (between the 1st and the 31st, at Castelo de Silves); “Mixtura”, with paintings and sculptures by Rian Helmik and Anna Knoop (from the 02nd to the 31st of March, at the Municipal Gallery of São Brás de Alportel); “O Peso da Cor”, with paintings by Raquel Taquelim d'Almeida (between the 2nd and the 30th, at the Pintor Samora Barros Art Gallery in Albufeira); and Ceramics of Alcoutim (from the 8th to the 25th, at the Casa dos Condes in Alcoutim).

 

 

In the field of performing arts and dance, the Algarve is the stage chosen to host the show “Amidnight” by the Olga Roriz company (Loulé, Cineteatro Louletano, on 15th, 21:30).

And as has been customary in recent years, March is one of the months when «365Algarve» makes its own and brings unique shows and events to the Algarve. «An example is the “Material Men Redux”, by Shobana Jeyasingh Dance, born from the symbiosis between Indian classical dance and hip-hop, which takes place on the 23rd, at 21 pm, at the Cineteatro Louletano, as part of the vast program of the V Encontros do Devir , and the «Jazz nas Adegas» with Paulo Strak Trio (on the 30th at 8:21 pm and on the 30th at the 9:17 pm, at Barranco do Vale, in Silves) and Tamal Hot Band (on the 00th at 15:21 pm and on the 30th at 16:17 pm, at the Convento do Paraíso , in Silves).

March also marks the start of another edition of the Algarve International Music Festival, on the 31st at the Cineteatro Louletano, and also features the virtuosity of Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro in yet another recital of the Algarve International Piano Festival, on the 30th March, at TEMPO, in Portimão. With the seal of this program, the «Ventania» – Performing Arts Festival with themes related to the environment and citizenship, which takes place between March 22nd and 24th, in Lagos, Portimão and Sagres .
