St. Vincent was a deacon of the Christian church in Zaragoza. In the fourth century of our era, the Roman authorities carried out the last great persecution against the Christians. For not having renounced his faith, Vincent was killed in the year 304, and his remains were buried in Valencia.

With the entry of Muslims into the Iberian Peninsula in the XNUMXth century, a group of Christians decided to collect the martyr's remains and transport them to a safe place. The chosen site was the ancient Sacred Promontory (Sagres), a place of worship for various peoples of the Mediterranean. There, the Church of Corvo flourished.

Later, on the initiative of the 1st King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, in 1173, the remains of the former Hispanic martyr were transferred to the city of Lisbon. From then onwards, the former Sacro Promontory was renamed Cabo de São Vicente, a name that it has kept until today.

São Vicente is the patron saint of Vila do Bispo, of the Diocese of Algarve and of the City of Lisbon.
