British tourists increase in November and help increase overnight stays in the Algarve

After seven months, overnight stays from non-residents rose again in the Algarve

The Algarve hotel industry registered 162 thousand guests and 687 thousand overnight stays, in November 2018, values ​​that correspond to positive year-on-year changes of 5,7% and 6,6%, respectively, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), known this Wednesday. British tourists contributed a lot to this rise, as this market increased by 15,3%.

Overnight stays from non residents increased again, in the Algarve, in November (+5,7%), after seven consecutive months of reductions. Although this trend has also been seen in the rest of the country, the rise in the Algarve was much higher than the national average, which stood at 2,2%.

In this parameter, in addition to the British market, Spain stood out in terms of tourist traffic, having registered an increase of 21,4%.

As for the internal market, «more than ever, it continues to shine in the Algarve», according to the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA). National overnight stays increased by 11,9% in November, to a total of 111 thousand overnight stays per month.

In the first eleven months of the year, «overnights spent by the Portuguese in the region add up to around 400 more overnights compared to the same period of the previous year and already exceed 4,2 million (+10,2%) of overnight stays», he stresses the RTA.

The average stay at hotels in the region also increased by 0,8%, to 4,23 nights, and the net bed occupancy rate, which stood at 27,6%, increased by 0,3 pp

Income accelerated, having, in total, an increase of 7,8%, while income from accommodation grew by 6%.

Between January and November, total income “are already slightly above one billion euros (+4,4%)”, according to RTA.

For João Fernandes, president of RTA, «although the final accounts for 2018 are not yet known, we can prove that we have not only grown in value, but also consolidated the level of tourist demand for the destination, practically equaling the best records ever in the region. And the icing on this cake is the expressive growth of British tourists in the region, up from 15 percent in November».

The Portuguese Hotel Association also released, this Wednesday, data from AHP Tourism Monitors, which refer that the average price per occupied room rose 20%, set at 60 euros. In this indicator, the Algarve registered the biggest increase nationally.

By zones, according to AHP, the occupancy rate was identical in Algarve Barlavento and Algarve Sotavento (45%), and, in the case of Sotavento, this figure represents a drop, compared to 2017, of 14 pp. The occupancy per room in the Algarve Centro stood at 37%.
