«The Algarve and the Country have lost the importance of historical sciences and culture», says the Chamber of Faro

Municipality recalls that Romero Magalhães lived in Faro up to the age of 17, having completed secondary studies at the Liceu Nacional de Faro

The Municipality of Faro received «with consternation and surprise the news of the death of full professor and historian Joaquim Romero Magalhães, which occurred today in Coimbra where he lived, victim of illness».

In a note of regret that has just been released, the Municipality of the Algarve capital emphasizes that «The Algarve and the Country have lost a great deal of historical science and culture».

Born in Loulé in 1942, Romero Magalhães lived in Faro up to the age of 17, having completed secondary studies at the Liceu Nacional de Faro.

He graduated in history from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, in 1967, was a high school teacher and full professor at FEUC, where he earned a doctorate.

He published a vast work of historical research, being one of the most prestigious names in activity. He was the curator of the Annals of the Municipality of Faro 2009 since.

He was also Constituent Deputy, General Commissioner of the National Commission for the Commemorations of the Portuguese Discoveries (1999-2002) and Secretary of State for Pedagogical Guidance (1976-1978).

Joaquim Romero Magalhães was distinguished, on December 12 this year, by the University of Algarve, who awarded him the title of doctor honoris causa.

«The Municipality is mourning, in solidarity with the family and friends of Joaquim Romero Magalhães, and publicly presents its most heartfelt condolences», concludes the note.

The University of Algarve has also decreed three days of academic mourning.
