New auditorium reinforces Cine-Teatro Louletano season

Theater piece about the Feast of the Sovereign Mother, António Zambujo and Pedro Abrunhosa are great attractions

Concerts by António Zambujo, Pedro Abrunhosa and Cristina Branco, a play about the emblematic Festa da Mãe Soberana and a new auditorium, located at Solar da Música Nova, are highlights of the next season of Cine-Teatro Louletano, in Loulé.

The cultural space of the city of Loulé announced its new season (January to July 2019) of artistic programming, «continuing with a wide artistic offer aimed at different audiences and guided by quality, diversity and originality, and thus continuing to affirm this concert hall as a reference in the South of the country», says Câmara de Loulé.

In 2019, a new auditorium will appear in the city, located at Solar da Música Nova (next to the Loulé Music Conservatory – Francisco Rosado), which «will enhance and allow the implementation of new and ambitious projects and dynamics in the level of municipal cultural intervention linked to to the performing arts, in a network programming logic, concerted and complementary between this space and the Cine-Teatro Louletano», explains the municipality.

While the latter will continue to privilege the presentation of diversified proposals, with greater strength, in the areas of Theater, Dance, Music and Multidisciplinary, the new auditorium will focus its action on a project of artistic and cultural mediation whose main vectors will be: approximation from the audiences to the universe of Music and its multiple derivations and dialogues, the formative (formal and informal) and reflective dimensions, art for children, artistic residencies in the field of performing arts and a close articulation, either with the Conservatory of Music , or with the municipality's cultural associations and the school community.

Regarding the programming for the Cine-Teatro, the universe of Theater «constitutes a clear strategic investment in this semester's schedule, with the presence of several companies, directors and renowned actors at national level».

Added to this is an increase in the number of co-productions, totaling nine for this season with special emphasis on the theatrical field: Teatro do Eléctrico, Teatro da Terra, Carla Maciel, Catarina Requeijo, João de Brito, Ana Borges/corpodehoje, being that these last two are breeders based in the Algarve.

One of the highlights is an artistic commission by Cine-Teatro Louletano to the renowned director from Quarteira Ricardo Neves-Neves for a contemporary reinterpretation, at the theatrical level, of the Feast of the Sovereign Mother, transposing this emblematic religious event, in an unprecedented way, to the stage .

The launch, also in co-production mode and in partnership with the Loulé association Folha de Medronho – Loulé Performing Arts Association, of a new theater festival, called Tanto Mar, exclusively dedicated to plays created by structures based in language-speaking countries Portuguese, promoting cultural lusophony in the Algarve region, is also an aspect to highlight this season.

The premiere of director João Samões, in Loulé, the play “Improvável” by ACTA – The Algarve Theater Company and a new model for the public presentation of Cenários – Exhibition of Theater of the Municipality of Loulé «are ingredients that also mark the programming at the theatrical field».

As for contemporary dance, there will be the absolute debut in the South of the country of new creations by two of the most prestigious Portuguese companies (Olga Roriz and Clara Andermatt, the latter co-produced by Cine-Teatro).

Added to this is the presentation of differentiating proposals, including those with an international dimension, integrated in the festival “Encontros do DeVIR”, organized by CAPa – Center for Performing Arts of the Algarve, now in its fifth edition with the theme “Denunciation”.

The new season also focuses on the world of Cinema «with three thematic exhibitions of undeniable relevance (Monstrare – International Social Film Exhibition, Latin American Film Festival and Italian Film Festival)».

With regard to music, Loulé pursues the strategy of premiering shows that come for the first time to southern Portugal.

That's why there will be concerts by Pedro Abrunhosa, António Zambujo and Cristina Branco.

«There is a concern to present special concerts, which reveal innovative and unexpected ingredients at the level of participants, themes and/or formats, such as the cases of the shows by Sam The Kid & Mundo Segundo with Napoleão Mira (joining son and father on stage, for the first time, on the 24th of April), the tribute to Carlos Paião on the 15th of June (an absolute first in the South of this format with several nationally renowned performers), the concert by the Algarve band Íris or the accordionist Nelson Conceição (who presents the his new album), or even the tribute “Por terra do Zeca”, which brings together on stage Zeca Medeiros, Filipa Pais, Maria Anadon and João Afonso», says the municipality.

The reception of artistic proposals that integrate the “365Algarve” program, in this case with the concerts “West Side Story” (with pianists Armando Mota and António Rosado, accompanied by the Percussionists from Lisbon) and the world premiere of the new work by Mário Laginha ( with the Matosinhos Quartet), «it is also a fundamental vector of programming».

The continuation of the bet on classical music, with several reference events integrated in the FIMA – Algarve International Music Festival, is also part of this logic of hosting events included in the 365Algarve programme.

The new season also reflects a focus on programming aimed at the municipality's school community, along a line that goes from pre-school (Catarina Requeijo presents the creation “É pro boy and prá girl”, centered on an extremely current issue: equality of genre), through the 1st cycle (the recognized duo formed by the choreographer Victor Hugo Pontes and the pianist Joana Gama revisit the theme of night and fear; and the creator Ana Borges makes the apology of positivity in life with her new show from theater and dance “Abel e Amália”), to the teen track, in which the Algarve's director João de Brito explores the following question: “Is friendship capable of surviving change?”.

In this new program, the regular items that are based on reflection and debate around themes related to culture, arts and letters, as well as on the appreciation of local figures with a unique and relevant path (respectively, the formats “Conversas à Quinta” and “From the Flavors of Culture”). In 2019, university professor and cultural manager Maria Cabral, stage director Nuno Carinhas, conductor Osvaldo Ferreira and musician (bass player) Marco Martins are invited.

The continuation of a strategic option (started in 2017), which consists of privileging the field of art for children (babies, parents and professionals working with this age group), through the strategic partnership with two leading companies at the national level, the Companhia Musicalmente (Leiria) and the Companhia de Música Teatral (Lisbon) continue to be a key feature of the Cine-Teatro Louletano programming.

«That is why, in the next season, various training actions, shows and lectures/debates will be privileged with this objective in mind, in a partnership both with the Municipality's kindergartens and with the University of the Algarve (Higher School of Education and Communication) », explains the municipality.

Regarding the schedule for the auditorium of the Solar da Música Nova (which will be inaugurated on February 1, 2019 with a special concert coordinated by Professor Manuel Rocha and involving teachers from the Loulé Music Conservatory, the result of an order from the Cine- Theater), the bet focuses on the area of artistic and cultural mediation, presenting a work that sustains, feeds and justifies the agenda proposed by the Cine-Teatro.

Entry to Solar da Música Nova

Thus, in concert with the city's schools and the Conservatory of Music, a thematic week will be held in March around classical music coordinated by conductor Osvaldo Ferreira, which will include various formats (concerts, training and performative conversations, in the auditorium and in schools) that aim to bring the general public closer to classical musical language.

Also in the line of musical mediation, Pedro Jóia, classical guitar figure, will start the cycle “Instrumentalia” with performative conversations, masterclass and concert in free card mode in May 2019, while the renowned Luísa Sobral opens the cycle “Personalíssima”, revisiting themes that marked his life in an commented concert format.

«It is also worth mentioning the start of a new musical cycle entitled “Ilustres Descobertas”, whose main motivation is the enhancement and presentation of emerging and/or unknown musical projects (both in the region and outside the region). The Algarve project Galopim and Raquel Ralha & Pedro Renato (former Belle Chase Hotel), Lince (by Sofia Ribeiro) and Cassete Pirata will participate in this cycle».

Children's art is also a priority in the programming of the new auditorium, with two training actions, one intensive and the other immersive (the latter model making an absolute first in the South after three years at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon ), aimed at educators, entertainers, artists/musicians and mediators, to be held between February and July 2019 and promoted by the aforementioned Companhia de Música Teatral.
