The Algarve Jazz Orchestra wants to professionalize its structure, a need that was presented to the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (CIM-AMAL) and deserved the attention of representatives from the various municipalities.
As a contribution to this end, the Câmara de Lagos approved, at its meeting on December 5, the signing of a protocol with OJA – Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve, which provides for the attribution of an annual subsidy of 20 thousand euros to that entity. .
In return for the support provided, the Lacobrigense municipality will receive two full training concerts and two small additional training concerts every year, to be included in the county's cultural program.
«Thus, the Municipality returns to cherish, in a more regular and expressive way, a cultural association that had its genesis in Lagos, in 2004, within the Lagos Jazz Festival, an initiative that took place for 10 years, always with the support of the municipality», explains the Chamber in a press release.
In addition to the concerts, OJA also promoted the teaching and production aspects, a work that deserved the recognition of the Ministry of Culture with the attribution of the declaration of High Cultural Interest.
Since 2006, OJA has received financial support from the Directorate General for the Arts (DGArtes), which proves to be “insufficient to cover fixed costs (staff; transport vehicles; sound equipment and lights; musical instruments, among others). others), since the amount of support awarded depends on the framework of OJA as an independent structure, as it does not have a legal framework in the support regime for Regional Orchestras (so-called Classics)».
The protocol to be signed and the support to be provided by the Municipality aim to consolidate the work that OJA has been developing in the cultural sphere, «which contributes to the enhancement of the region as a tourist destination», explains the Lagos municipality.
Underlying are also, among others, the following objectives: promotion of cultural literacy; dynamization of music and jazz teaching offer; enhancement of Algarve musicians and residents in the Algarve or in the municipality and establishment of qualified assets; creation of original repertoires, contributing to Portuguese authorial work; and creation of specific events for the county, broadening the programming spectrum.
