Algarve had more guests and more overnight stays in October

Overnight stays from residents in Portugal started to grow again

Guests (+2,3%), overnight stays (+0,4%) and total income (+4,7%) from hotels and similar establishments in the Algarve registered a year-on-year positive evolution in October, reported this Friday , December 14, the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In the country – and also in the region – overnight stays from residents grew and those from non residents decreased compared to the previous year, reinforces the INE, which indicates a monthly growth in overnight stays from Portuguese people in the Algarve much higher than in other national regions.

In October, the Algarve hotel industry registered 1,8 million overnight stays, an increase of 0,4% compared to the same month of the previous year, explained by «the excellent performance of residents, who registered a positive variation of 24,4%. Overnight stays from foreigners fell by 2,7%, even so, less than the national average (-3,2%)», says the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), in a press release.

«In the first ten months of the year, the destination totaled 17,6 million overnight stays, a drop of 1,6%, also justified by the results of non-residents, who accumulate 670 thousand fewer overnight stays».

On the opposite pole, “until October there are 388 thousand more overnight stays from Portuguese people (+10,3%) than those recorded in the same period of the previous year. The expressive growth of the domestic market means that in ten months of 2018 there have already been more overnight stays from national tourists (more than 4,1 million) than in the entire year 2017 (close to 4 million)».

In the Algarve, total income reached 88,7 million euros and income from accommodation reached 60 million euros, in October, which represented increases of 4,7% and 2,6%, respectively. Total income grew by 4,3% in the first ten months of the year, reaching one billion euros, and are already at the same level as the result obtained throughout 2017 in the region.

There was also a 2,3% growth in October, to a total of 408 guests at the destination. The average monthly stay amounted to 4,41 nights and the net bed occupancy rate was 52,6%. Between January and October, guests grow 1,1% and total 3,9 million.
