The Independent Doctors Union «regrets and does not accept the disrespect for the Algarve region», as no vacancies have been opened at the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA) for specialist doctors who are scarce in the Algarve, in the competition launched by the Government on 19 December.

In a public position released today, the union's Algarvian delegation denounced the case and demanded "that the situation be corrected with the opening of vacancies in an adequate number to the needs in the Algarve in the next competition for hospital assistants".

SIM emphasizes its “surprise and concern” with the lack of vacancies for specialties such as gynecology/obstetrics and orthopedics.

«The Algarve is extremely lacking in human resources, with the medical staff of these specialties reduced to one third of its needs», they illustrate.

In the case of the two maternity hospitals - Faro and Portimão – have worked thanks to «the hiring of more than 50% of doctors throughout the year, to ensure care in the emergency service».

The union's position comes days after the president of the Chamber of Faro have denounced that the alleged lack of doctors in those specialties could lead to the "closure of the only differentiated perinatal care unit" in the Algarve, as well as questioning the emergency stopovers, during Christmas and New Year. This last one situation was denied by the administration of CHUA.
