Archaeological remains of Quarteira will give rise to the exhibition in 2020

The Loulé Museum team counts on everyone's collaboration for this purpose

The Municipal Museum of Loulé wants to hold an exhibition on archeology in 2020, in Quarteira, based on the remains collected throughout the parish. Until then, the idea is to «listen to tips from the population» because, despite the large collection that already exists, from places like Loulé Velho, «there is much more to discover».

This is an "exhibition that will be what people want it to be," said Alexandra Pires, archeologist at the Câmara de Loulé, to the Sul Informação.

Because, he explained, "we are counting on the collaboration of the population." «We have received some clues from fishermen, people who go diving or others who like to walk on the beach and collect archaeological remains».

It is also with this collaboration of the citizens in mind that the Loulé Museum has organized, in Quarteira, the “Laboratórios da Memória” initiative, whose objective is, in fact, to listen to the stories of the population about the places where there may be more traces.

This was, for example, the case of the most recent “Laboratório da Memória” (Memory Laboratory), in which the possibility of having underwater wall structures in the areas of Loulé Velho and Forte Novo was mentioned. These are important clues for future archaeological work to be carried out.

For example, João Carlos Santos, researcher on the history of Quarteira and one of the "Heritage Guardians", revealed, in the same initiative, that, in the Loulé Velho area, he found two weights of fishing net and, already at sea, about 8 miles off the coast, he collected a ceramic container.

«People can only borrow the pieces they find for the exhibition or, if they want, donate them to the Museum. There is a large collection in the parish of Quarteira, but there is much more to discover. Some of the pieces already collected are currently in the exhibition at the National Museum of Archeology, in Lisbon, but they will come back», summarized Alexandra Pires, in statements to our newspaper.

For now, he revealed, the team of archeologists at the Museu de Loulé will begin a «new phase of work on Loulé Velho». "We are very interested in planning the next interventions, since the site is disappearing", carried by the sea, he warned.

Still, "clues about other possible sites on the coastline, which have archaeological remains, are to be taken into account." Always aiming at this exhibition on archeology, which is still unknown where it will take place.

One of the possible places to host the exhibition could be the future Cultural Center of Quarteira, about which "there will be news soon," said Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, to the Sul Informação.

As for the exhibition itself, it is something that the mayor «looks with good eyes and sympathy», as it is «another initiative to divulge our heritage».

“I believe in a council with memory, education and culture. These are areas that have to guide the municipal work», he also referred.

And the truth is that everyone can help with this exhibition. If you have found any archaeological piece in the parish of Quarteira, you can contact the Museu de Loulé, by calling 289 400 885 or by e-mail [email protected].
