Gilão dredging opens the door to new wharves on the Tavira riverfront

After the dredging, the Vessel Reorganization Project on the Gilão River will proceed, which includes the creation of five new embarkation platforms

Docapesca has already started the maintenance dredging of funds from the Gilão River, in Tavira. For the president of the Tavirense Chamber, this is a «very important» project, not only because it improves the navigability and safety conditions of the channel, but because it will allow «the next intervention, the implementation of a set of platforms along the river».

The launch of this intervention was announced this Tuesday by Docapesca, which will invest around 281 euros in improving navigability and safety between the auction building in this city and the road bridge to the east. A measure applauded by Jorge Botelho, who is already thinking about the future and the intervention that will follow.

For now, dredging is advancing, with the objective of «recovering the minimum service quotas essential for the operation of parking and unloading fish at auction», according to Docapesca. At the same time, an attempt is made to alleviate another problem. This is an area «still subject to the influence of the tide», so «the river's marginal areas are subject to the risk of flooding, with records of overtopping in flood situations».

The intervention now underway, which should be completed within a month and a half, will also be “essential for the Vessels Reorganization Project on the Gilão River, which includes the implementation of berthing structures (platforms) along the right bank of the river, between the Mercado da Ribeira and the Ponte dos Descobrimentos», added the company.

Within the scope of this project, five piers will be installed on the Tavira riverfront, "for the unloading of fish, for the operation of maritime-tourist companies, for the embarkation to the island of Tavira, for professional fishing vessels and for fuel supply" .

In Jorge Botelho's view, the new platforms will not only improve the working conditions of fishing professionals, but also “much improve the conditions for boarding passengers to the islands and maritime-tourists”.

This is one of the three interventions that Docapesca has in progress or will carry out in the same area. The first two, the reconstruction of the auction building and these dredgings, «are already underway».

The third, the placement of the new boarding docks, «I think it is entering the competition. The goal is for everything to be completed before the summer of 2019», assured Jorge Botelho.

The dredging of the Tavira dam and the Ria Formosa channels has yet to have a defined date. «This work is not the responsibility of Docapesca, but of the General Directorate of Marine Resources. The Polis Society played a part and there was an intervention at the bar right after the storms this winter, but more needs to be done. As far as I know, the preliminary study is ongoing. I hope it moves forward as quickly as possible, as they are very necessary», considered Jorge Botelho.
