"Museums for whom?" is the theme of the Algarve Museum Network Conference

Conferences will be an opportune moment for a “more current reflection on the vision, mission and functions of museums”

"Museums for whom?" is the subject of debate at the second Conferences of the Algarve Museum Network (RMA), which will take place on November 16, at Quinta de Marim, headquarters of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, in Olhão.

The “diversity of proximity strategies between museums, museological and heritage structures and models of cultural, scientific and social interaction, in the context of the plurality of their audiences, users and communities”, explain the organizers.

Participants will thus «reflect on the most appropriate methodologies and pedagogical processes that facilitate greater accessibility to museums, their contents, ideas and objectives, in order to reduce conceptual, interpretative, age, linguistic and physical barriers».

The II RMA Journeys will also be an opportune moment for a “more up-to-date reflection on the vision, mission and functions of museums, debating the various options resulting from a more focused position on the expectations of their visitors and their communities, proposing a more involvement assumed and attentive to the contributions of a more participative and cooperative society».

Finally, it is intended to contribute to the «evolutionary and dynamic development of the very definition of museum and its new challenges, continuing and developing the training and intervention policy of the Algarve Museum Network and its professionals».

Throughout the day, the program includes several sharing moments. After the opening session at 9:30 am, four interventions on two thematic panels will be presented and debated.

The 1st panel will have as its theme the “Multiplicity of pedagogical processes and accessible methodologies in museums”, and will feature the participation of Portuguese guests Ana Garcia and Mário Vairinhos.

The 2nd panel, on “Strategies of proximity between museums and the plurality of their audiences”, will have the participation of the Portuguese guest Samuel Silva and the Brazilian Mona Nascimento.

In the afternoon, the participants will be divided into three Working Groups, in which they will be invited to discuss and propose contributions, namely, in Group 1, on a new definition of museum and its new challenges; in Group 2, to present proposals for the concept of universal accessibility in a plural museum; in Group 3, on the role of museums in deepening the participatory and interventionist spirit in society.

There follows a brief presentation of the Posters/Posters, which will be exhibited during the event, in which the various entities that make up the Algarve Museum Network will present their own reflection and approach on the theme of the “Museums for Who?” conference.

Finally, after the communication of the results of the work of the meetings of the three groups, the conclusions will be presented and the Conference will close.

The II RMA Journeys have the support of the Municipality of Olhão and the Nature Conservation and Forestry Institute of the Algarve, and participation is free with mandatory registration.
