More than 700 people join ASMAA's popular action against oil contracts in Portugal

This action against oil prospecting and exploration is one of the most participated popular actions, if not the most participated popular action ever to occur in Portuguese Justice

More than 700 people and two associations, one of them an environmentalist and headquartered in Pombal, formed part of the popular action of the ASMAA – Algarve Surf and Maritime Activities Association, against oil contracts in Portugal, following the announcement published by order of the Court Administrative and Fiscal of Loulé in the press.

“The massive response, which took place in just 10 days, will make this popular action one of the most participated ever to take place in Portugal”, stresses Laurinda Seabra, ASMAA director.

O ad was published last week, giving notice to all interested parties to intervene in the action against oil contracts.

Sérvulo e Associados and PLMJ, two of the largest Portuguese law firms, are representing the Government and ENI/GALP in this process, with the presence of a former minister in the legal team.

«This team tried to attack the legitimacy of ASMAA to invoke the defects of contracts, illegalities and unconstitutionalities, but the response of the citizens, who massively supported this action, bluntly denies this legal device and legitimizes this action even more», stresses Laurinda Seabra, in a statement.

The more than 700 citizens and the two associations that responded to the Court of Loulé agreed to be represented by ASMAA in this process against the Portuguese State, the Ministry of Economy, the National Entity for the Energy Sector (ENSE), the Ministry of the Sea, the Board -General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM), the Ministry of Environment, the General Directorate of Energy and Geology (DGEG) and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), alongside GALP and ENI.

"These figures make this action against oil prospecting and exploration one of the most participated popular actions, if not the most participated popular action ever to occur in Portuguese justice", stresses ASMAA.
